A 500 FESTIVAL & INDIANAPOLIS SOO EDUCATION PROGRAM Presented by Indiana University Health Nearly 22,000 Indiana fourth graders put the pedal to the metal through education. The 500 Festival and Indianapolis 500s Education Program, presented by Indiana University Health, strives to educate and foster creativity in Hoosier fourth graders through historical, social and economic significance of the 500 Festival, Indianapolis 500® and Indiana's thriving motorsports industry. This Indiana Academic Standards-based curriculum is designed to coincide with Indiana's fourth-grade focus on state history. The program provides teachers with lesson plans, activities and a corresponding DVD to teach students about the 500 Festival, Indianapolis 500* and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway*. In addition, all classrooms that participate have the opportunity to attend one of nine Study Trips to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway® in April or May. During the course of the Study Trip, fourth-grade classrooms travel from station to station to learn more about IMS and the Indianapolis 500s. Stations include, but are not limited to, a scavenger hunt in the IMS Hall of Fame Museum, a tour of the Pagoda and Victory Podium, seeing a race car up close and personal and being inside the Medical Hospital that is used throughout the month of May. In correlation with IU Health's presenting sponsorship of the Program, a Health & Nutrition Station was added this year featuring a video of IndyCar driver James Hinchcliffe teaching students what drivers do to stay fit and healthy. The Study Trip is used to not only "test" what the students learn through the in-class curriculum, but also enhance their learning experience with interactive pieces. In 2012, nearly 22,000 students will participate in this free program and around 8,000 will attend a Study Trip to IMS. Since its inception in 2004, more than 178,000 Indiana fourth-grade students have participated in this program. The 500 Festival Foundation generates funds to support youth and educational programs of the 500 Festival such as the 500 Festival & Indianapolis 500s Education Program.
