Jr. Drag Racing League The NHRA is getting involved in the 500 Festival on a kid's level, with events designed to promote educational programs and introduce youngsters to the sport of drag racing. First of all, the Jr. Drag Racing League- dubbed the "Little League" of drag racing- will be on hand May 6 for the Bank One 500 Festival Kids' Day on Monument Circle. There, the League will give away thousands of tickets to the 2nd Annual Jr. Drag Racing League National Championships scheduled for July 27-30 at Indianapolis Raceway Park. "We'd like to invite every kid in Indy, if possible," said David Woodruff, director of the league. Tickets can be picked up at the Jr. Drag Racing League booth at Kids' Day. There kids also can get league and membership information; pick up a copy of the league's official magazine, Jr. Drag Racer, and even sit behind the wheel of a real junior dragster. In April, the league awarded "scholarships" to a junior drag racing school at Indianapolis Raceway Park. "Scholarship" winners were chosen from the honor roll students in the CPI Photo Finish/Chevrolet Winners' Circle Honor Roll Program. Sixteen kids will receive a day of intense drag racing training at the track, scheduled during the week of the Jr. National Championships. Tickets to the Jr. National Championships also will be distributed to the honor roll students. Started in 1992, the Jr. Drag Racing League has seen explosive growth. The participants, ranging from ages 8 and 17, race mini-scaled dragsters with 5-horsepower engines. The league boasts of 5,000 members from throughout the country, including Puerto Rico. Members also live in Mexico and Canada. Being involved with kids is nothing new for the National Hot Rod Association. Formed in 1951 to offer a safe alternative to street racing, NHRA established in 1989 the NHRA Youth and Education Services with the goal of providing quality programs, materials and services to educators, program coordinators and students. The NHRA Youth and Education Services has the following objectives: ■ strengthen the relationship between the NHRA, sponsors and schools; ■ enable students to understand more about the world of work at a relatively early age and thus help them make decisions about their futures; ■ instill students with new attitudes, knowledge and competencies necessary for life and work; and ■ motivate students to high achievements.
