A GROWING NURSERY FOR A GROWING NEED A bright new tuture is in store for the Indianapolis Day Nursery. Ground was broken in the fall of 1970 for the new $650,000 Day Nursery facility to replace the 100-year-old house which is the present Lockerbie Branch. The new building, located in a square block area bounded by 9th, East, Arch, and Park, is scheduled for completion in early 1971. 160 children, 3 to 5 years old, will be cared for at the new nursery. Grade-school children may be cared for after school and during the summer months. In addition there will be a multipurpose room available for group activities, including parent and community meetings, plus special purpose rooms for social and case workers, a health clinic, teacher's study, office staff, kitchen, laundry, and storage. There are two other branches of the Indianapolis Day Nursery — West, at 2402 West Michigan Street, and North, at 3522 North Central Avenue. All three, under the direction of Robert E. Lewis, provide excellent all day care, hot lunches, afternoon naps, class-room instruction, supervised play from a staff composed of two trained and experienced teachers for each group plus a registered nurse and a part time physician, a dietician, and a caseworker to help work out arrangements and maintain relationship between parents and the nursery. The welfare of children of working parents is the primary interest of the Indianapolis Day Nursery. Founded in 1901, this non-profit organization provides "maternal" type care at minimum cost.
